Reese Witherspoon’s sage advice for women on their relationships and ambition

Ambition is certainly not something that Reese Witherspoon lacks. At 41, she is an
Oscar-winning actress, successful television and film producer and a mother of
three beautiful children. In a September article for Glamour, the star penned an inspirational essay about ambition and how she’s used hers to navigate the male-dominated
Hollywood industry. Through the candid

“What if all women were encouraged to be more ambitious?”
the Home Again actress asked at the
start of the manifesto. She then went on to discuss how at the beginning of her
career she would basically be the only girl on a film set. “I was literally
surrounded by 150 men,” she wrote. “Fast-forward to today, and I have never
been on the job with so many women, ever.”

The star also brought the women-empowerment conversation out
of Hollywood and into the bigger picture. She had some wise-words for women everywhere. Reese, who married agent Jim Toth in 2011, shared: “When I saw the recent
Harvard study that found that single female M.B.A. students downplayed their
career ambitions in front of male classmates for fear of possibly hurting their
marriage prospects, I thought, UGH. Run away from a man who can’t handle your
ambition. Run. So many men think ambition is awesome and sexy!”

The trailblazing talent discussed cultivating an environment
that was conducive to helping women thrive. Reese said, “There’s no point in
toiling away and wasting your ambition on people who don’t value your
strengths.” She also encouraged people out there to start dialogues about
these topics with their families and, specifically, children. “We have to do our part to change
the idea that a woman with passion and ambition is only out for herself. So
talk to your kids about ambition as a positive trait in men and women.”

“All we can do to create change is work hard. That’s my
advice: Just do what you do well. If you’re a producer, you’ve got to produce.
If you’re a writer, you’ve got to write. If you’re in corporate America, keep
working hard to bust through the glass ceiling,” she said. “So back to my
question,” the mom of 17-year-old Ava, Deacon, 13, and Tennessee,4, added, coming full circle, “what would happen if we encouraged
all women to be a little more ambitious?” She strongly wrote: “I think the
world would change.”
